The Info-Dump Pilot

Miles Teller Drumming Alone In A Dark Room

Helloooo and welcome to the Popcorn for Dinner Newsletter! And yes, there is a correct way to read that intro.

Thank you for subscribing, for opening this email and above all, for continuing to tolerate us. We’re under no illusions as to the importance of this little community we’ve built and we hope that this newsletter continues to strengthen our relationship.

Sorry in advance for this issue's length, by the way. It's our first one and we got a little excited.

At its core, this podcast is still about sharing great films and TV with you all, so we’ll use this newsletter to highlight what we’re loving, but unable to discuss on the pod. If you have a question for us or a take about our takes, feel free to email us with the button below. We’ll also highlight episodes you might have missed and preview upcoming ones we’re excited about. So yeah, please feel free to share this with the pop culture obsessive in your life and let’s continue to build something great here.

Did This Guy Just Throw A Chair?!

Okay, before we highlight some of our recent work, there’s a Japan-sized hole we need to address.

No, we didn’t cover SHOGUN.

Was this because we didn’t trust Bankole to talk about Mariko-sama for 10 weeks straight in a way that wouldn’t piss off any future girlfriends?

Maybe, we can’t say for sure.

In a different world, we’d all commit seppuku for this transgression and tbh, the day is still young. However, Ebube was absolutely not willing to let this slide, and dove deep into the Sengoku period a few weeks ago with Ayisha, who recently made the ill-advised decision to join us full-time.

"Four Words You'll Never Hear From The NFL"

Bankole chimes in

Okay, the Neiman family dinner is a good point to interject. Speaking of Ayisha, she, Lolade and I covered Kate Winslet’s THE REGIME. A good (and often very funny) show that always felt like a massive case of unfulfilled potential. This feeling was echoed weeks later with another HBO series, THE SYMPATHIZER. That was mostly more successful than THE REGIME but both shows were unable to make that final step into greatness despite having all the ingredients to do so.

My most fun coverage of the year remains TMT & I’s two-episode discussion on MR & MRS SMITH. The second season was recently announced and considering how the first ended, TMT & I theorised back in February about the possibility of it becoming an anthology-style show in future seasons.

A few other highlights were Ebube, Ayisha and Tola (AN ACTUAL RELATIONSHIP THERAPIST!) discussing the latest season of LOVE IS BLIND, Ayisha and Lolade throwing away all decorum for BRIDGERTON Season 3, Part 1, the conclusion of Ebuka, Chiagoziem and Oseghale’s INVINCIBLE Season 2 coverage and honestly, a lot more.

Also, you might have picked up on the fact that this inaugural newsletter is chaptered using Damien Chazelle’s 2014 masterpiece, WHIPLASH. Don’t think too hard, there are no thematic connections, we just sat down and thought of some scenes we liked.

Andrew Breaks Up with Supergirl

It’s been a fun few months on the IS THIS CINEMA front. The team started the year with a marathon pre-Oscars coverage, culminating in Emma Stone winning her second Oscar and the OPPENHEIMER sweep. Then after their impassioned DUNE discussion, they went on a 2-month break before reviewing another Zendaya banger; the electrifying CHALLENGERS.

Bankole crashed an episode to rank the films in the 'Goofy Ryan Gosling' oeuvre, then Ayisha and Lolade spoke about THE IDEA OF YOU and their favourite ‘I’m Just a Girl’ Films.

And now it’s time for summer movie season, babyyyyyyy. LFG

Concussed Andrew Attacks Fletcher

What do we have coming up? Well, June is an insanely stacked month and a great time for the person in your life who makes TV their entire personality.

Season 4 of THE BOYS — recently renewed for season 5 — returns on June 13th with a 3-episode premiere, and a rotating roster of Bankole, Bolu, Oseghale and Chiagoziem will check in to Vought for that.

Ebube and Fammy return to Westeros for Season 2 of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON on June 16th, and ‘The Bear’ finally opens with THE BEAR Season 3 returning on June 27th.

Of course, June also sees the film releases of INSIDE OUT 2 (fuck yeah, but PG), THE BIKERIDERS — starring Austin Butler, Mike Faist, Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy — and KINDS OF KINDNESS, Yorgos Lanthimos & Emma Stone’s follow-up to POOR THINGS. All films were featured in our recent Most Anticipated Summer 2024 Films podcast.

Before all that though, Eyo & TMT returned last week for a chaotic, hilarious, and all-over-the-place chat with Bankole. They accused him of segregating the guests, so to prove that he isn’t a dictator, he made the unilateral decision to pair up Eyo and Ayisha for this week’s episode recommending some heartwarming TV shows for the summer.

"Go White Boy Gooooo"

That’s it for now, thank you so much for reading this far. We again promise that future newsletters won’t be this long but... can you really trust us?

And now we’re off to go make our abusive, older mentor finally respect us by pushing ourselves beyond all reasonable limits.

Cue the final 10 mins of WHIPLASH.

September 2024 Issue#4 Some Special Friends - and Horses - Returned! There are some things we might never know the answers to; Do aliens exist? Was Kendall’s name crossed out or underlined? Just what kind of blackmail does Bankole have on Mickey & Konrad? Whatever it is though, we hope he has backed up his files because the genius creators behind our little chaotic finance show RETURNED to the podcast this week. They touched on how they decided to use Harper and Yasmin this season, what the...

August 2024 Issue#3 What Harper's Hairstyles Say About Her on INDUSTRY Yes, you’ve read that title correctly. That is exactly what we’re doing. We are going to use hair to discuss one of the most divisive, and frankly, probably the last great anti-hero on TV. Is it a dumb idea? Maybe. Is it fun? Hopefully. Are those the exact types of ideas that this newsletter is built for? Abso-fucking-lutely. Obviously, massive spoilers for Seasons 1 & 2 of INDUSTRY Let's Talk About Hair, Baby Whenever I...

July 2024 Issue#2 The Best TV Episode of the Month Yes, that’s right. We’re back! Some doubted us, many said we wouldn’t continue, everyone laughed.* *no one, in fact, laughed and everyone has been really supportive; which has been so nice. Thank you. To mark this Summer’s TV boom, we all decided to share the best TV episode we watched in June. It could be from literally any show, currently airing or otherwise, viewed for the first time or the hundredth. The only rule? We have to have watched...
